--whatever-it-is is old, but I don't have a clue HOW old
--the word is so overused and cutesified that it makes me snort when I use it, so I use it just to have an excuse to snort. Snort.
Whatever. Here's a new Give Away:

Now, these are old. I don't know how old. They were sold to me as antiques, at an antique store. Whatever that means. I think there are two complete sets. One may have lower case letters, too.
(If you can't imagine why I'd want to give these up, it's because I have an identical set in a wooden box that I've never, ever used. Two antique wood-mounted rubber alphabet sets. Jesus. It's worse than all those leather bags.)And this microscopic date set, in its own cute little tape-mended box:

I don't know--there's no way I'm dumping them out and sorting them and checking for all the letters. I could really get into that, and then I'd begin to clean them and then maybe construct a little box for them, test them all out and re-glue anything coming loose, and. . . .well. You get the picture. There are some things I just know better than to do. Some places I know not to go. I do not know how well these work--I'm imagining you're going to get cool and funky impressions that look old and worn, rather than perfect, good-as-new impressions as you do from new stamps.
I have to admit to you that I've never used these. I don't even remember if I ever tried them out at all after I paid a bunch of money to make them mine, years ago. It's like another lifetime ago, when I used to Shop. Here's what you do: post a comment and tell me what you'd do with these wonderful things if you had them. I'll pick someone on Friday.
(In the meantime, I've still got 3 boxes of stamps ready to go to the post office--got to get that done SOON.)

OH, what a fun find. I love funky old stamps like those...and the mini ones are precious! If I got any of these I would use them on ATCs and on the skinny book pages that I have yet to start for our Yahoo Group challenge. I am WAY behind but I still intend to do them...it has just been a difficult winter for my muse. LOL
If I had these stamps, it would give me a big boost to add lots of interesting text to all the painted fabric pieces I just brought home from Art and Soul yesterday. This is a direction that I've wanted to go into for a while. I also took a bookmaking class from Daniel Essig this weekend and I've got the knowledge now to bind some of my own books, so I need to make some content! I am so excited that my whole body feels like it is physically pumped full of air - I know it is art vibes and ideas.
I've wanted to make some art quilts from my travel journal from Italy in 2006 for quite some time, which I blogged at my website. You can see it if you go to http://slowlysheturned.net/?cat=2. That may be where I'll start.
Let's see...first i would open the box they come in and smell. Then i would take them out and fondle them one by one. (oohh and ahhh appropriately) I would then have to get my journal out and stamp a few to see how they look in print. Of course they would then have to be on dsplpay for a bit (show off)before i would used them for some kind of funky art project-some type (no pun intended)of assemblage...
First, I would probably dump them all out onto my studio table and look for duplicates. Any duplicate number or letter, I would either use in my "art supply mobile" I've been creating to hang from the ceiling of my studio. If any of the dupes are small enough, I would probably drill a hole into the wooden part, and slip on a jump ring and use them as charms. Other than those 2 ideas, I would use the rest as intended; stamping in my art work, my journal, and my book binding projects. I'll keep my fingers crossed!
How generous of you to share your treasure! If these were mine, I would be tickled pink to have an alphabet set that's not cutesy. I am just starting to spread my wings as an artist and I am so drawn to old, funky styles to which these letters would lend themselves perfectly! Thank you for the opportunity to participate in your drawing =)
I DO like it ....but I know better...I would probably never use them either ...too easy to just write what I want on what I want...but I am writing to see if you got my address I e-mailed you for the red evening bag give away??..it was a bit ago....I didn't want to be a pest....Ginger
Wow - what a marvelous treasure! My 16 yodd and I both keep journals - art journals and "vent and rage" journals. :) So...these stamps would be put to good use in all of our journals. :)
oh, ginger--i'm so sorry, but the bag is gone. i didn't get your address--i don't know why--although i posted a couple of notes asking for it. i finally gave up and tucked the bag in another package and sent it off.
many, many apologies.
OK, Rice, I'm in. I love old text! I'll even promise to send my address immediately if I get picked!
I'd use letter stamps to embellish fabric to make dolls that'd get beaded. Small art quilts would be adorned with stamped letters too.
remember the apron? I'm working on making it into a social statement (funny how it said that to me when it arrived) complete with drawings of vacuums and old wringer washing machines, etc, and I've been trying to decide how to letter on the phrase "a woman's work is never done" along with some other things --- these would be PERFECT!!!
soooooo, I'm hoping you'll pick me!!
Oh these look cool! I have never stamped anything, but I would love to try. I have a denim jacket and denim skirt that I picked up at the Thrift store, and don't know yet quite what I want to do with them, but would love to try adding some words to them.

Hah! Ok, ok, I admit I'm the recipient of some of your stamps but I'm just going to be greedy and sign up for these too.
I already have a pair of jeans that I'll start altering (first pair) right after I finish that shirt I'm altering... and currently stitching on... well because you suggested stitching and I'm out to try some of everything.

Alphabet Stamps
If I get these stamps, I will:
Tell everybody about your cool give away and I will share the story of how I got them on my blogs.
Then, all of my art friends will want to see them and make something with them, so we will all get together for an "art day." We will share the stamps, get our paper and fingers messy with inks, eat a lot of good food and just turn the day into a event because of this crazy give away.
Someone will say, "Oh my gosh, this is so neat, we need to tell our story to the newspaper - we will - and then someone will tell CNN and Martha Stewart and all of the other news organizations will bring their big satellite trucks to my home that is on a little rural island in south Georgia - we will be interviewed, they will show pictures of our creations, they will film the box of these vintage (snort) beauties. Martha will want to buy them, but they will never be sold because we all know that they have magical powers of bringing people together, and they will become a way for us to lower the gas prices and find world peace.
Just kidding. I will do the first part of telling everyone about them and getting a bunch of friends together to enjoy the story and to make a fun day out using your old stamps to make art. I will also share them with a creative 10 year old that lives down the road from me. I can just see the other part happening.
If I were lucky enough to be picked I would pay the cost of freight to France - very important, that!.
I live in an area which is hopelessly empty of all the things that would make my creativity so much richer. Apart from the potters in our village - and me and a weaver I know - no one does anything more adventurous than following cross-stitch kit patterns. It's painful!
I want shops selling beads and merino tops and RUBBER STAMPS but I would have to take the long journey to Paris for that. Not easy. And too expensive.
I would use the stamps for the commemorative wall hangings I make to celebrate my life and my friends' and children's lives. At present I embroider the words.
Well, I suppose I could carry on doing that...
If I were lucky enough to win these faboo stamps, I would use them in my mixed media paintings. I am intrigued by using text as pattern, to create complex designs. I am currently working on pieces for a show called Pattern & Pixel. I would use the stamps (carefully w/acrylic paint) to stamp directly on the claybord that I am using for this series.
I would also be reallyreally grateful!!!!!
once again...i have an undramatic story. i am a silversmith that is venturing out to mixed media and going to make an art journal...yes painted pages and all, did i mention i have no idea how to paint, i just figured out acyrlics might be a place to start...stamping is something new too, so stamps are not something i have much of. i do know how to write, but i think it would be kool to make text with fun, funky and different size/type letters. so...that's what i know about wanting to be concidered for the great vintage alphabet stamps. oh by the way Rice, i watched the google video...very good you have a way with words, WOW...was i surprised by your voice...i thought you would be all twany and all...bein` you're from texas and usin` the ya'll tang. regardless...you definitly make me LOL a lot and that's a good thang!! happy trails girl friend...play well shelley
This will be fun for the ransom notes I could create when I steal hubby's food. Just kidding. I've just started to use my Gocco printer more, so I think these would supplement my gocco prints on fabric. I like the vintage look.
Yesterday I was at home sleeping and missed a work meeting. Why was I asleep in the middle of the day? I am, (or was), taking an antidepressant that knocks me out. I show up at the meeting with "bed" face and there's no getting around that clearly I've been on the snooze. So, I'm thinking about it this morning, about the taking of antidepressants and came to the conclusion that a pill pulls me down to a consistent level of mediocrity and what I really need to do is make some art to shake up the energy and get it flowing. I've thought about making art for a while now but didn't know what kind. I went to the craft store today and saw the stamping stuff and well, that's what I want to do. Then tonight I run across your web site - there are no coincidences.
Well, FRICKEN FRACK! I missed out on this brilliant giveaway. Hmmmph. I was doing a stamp search and found you and these awesome old stamps that I could have used in my hierloom (will be around for a hundred years), one of a kind, awesomely sweet pieces of pottery. I do hand/foot impressions of children and make them into unique plaques and ornaments. SHUCKS!

i have rice's book- it's fabulously inspiring. woohoo! if i had these stamps i would sneak art into work and make the art work for us. i teach high schoolers how to be more self determining readers and thinkers (and why not artists?). anyhow, i'd start by bringing in my lavender linen blouse and asking the kids to stamp the titles of their favourite books all over it. (my recommendation is THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABRET. it's thrillingly innovative and artful. good story, too!) anyhow, after everyone had an opportunity to stamp their faves on, i'd invite them to embellish. i could refer them to my old copies of Belle Armoire if they needed to consume some ideas first... then, I'LL WEAR THE KIDS' WORK with great RELISH. these often marginalized teens would love it, and it would drive most of the adults mad. and the kids would love that too! THAT'S ONLY THE BEGINNING. there will undoubtedly be a group of kids who find this exciting and empowering, and they will demand MORE for THEIR wardrobes (self determination!). i'm envisioning kids clad in their own 'smarty (and arty) pants' Who knows what they'll have to say, and how they'll say it? We are all artists, and life is our canvass!
