My name rhymes with "Lisa," I live in Midland, Texas, because it's warm and the mortgage is cheap, and no, my hair is not naturally orange. The EGE--The Ever-Gorgeous Earl--is my husband of 32 years. I have the best job in the world because I get to call up artists and ask them nosy questions and then write about them. In my spare time I write. Yeah, I know that's kind of pathetic, but what can I say?

What Not to Draw: A Cautionary Journal Spank

The bad thing about drawing something first thing in the morning is that, if you hate what you do, then you’re going to hate it all day long. And—even worse!—if you then decide to do a Do Over and draw something else? Well, chances are that, in your newly grouchy state, it’s going to suck the big winkie, too.

But nevertheless, I thought it would be fun to take photos of the things I’m going to draw, so you can draw along. I learned a couple of things this morning:

--transparent is TOUGH

--I suck as perspective

--one Do Over was not enough.

--it’s tougher but WAY more fun to draw things with more details, where every single line all by itself isn’t that important

But give it a try:  pick one of these, or try both of these, and then maybe I’ll post mine. And maybe not—if I still feel this grouchy about them, I’ll go draw something else.

Rice,

While the size is all wrong and the perspective sucks, I liked this challenge. Maybe later I will try again and see if I can do better. For now I am trying to show my first effort.

You can see it here:

Vicki...these are pretty good.
I was just reminded of something listening to Danny Gregory's podcasts. He was talking to an artist who reminded him that for every good picture we see on someone's blog or FLICKR page, there are probably 3 days of sucky drawings. Even artists have bad days. I tell myself that every time I do a drawing I don't like.
(especially the last two days drawing people)

There was no question, Ricë! The binder clip was about a thousand times more fun to draw, even though I fussed with it more and found it simpler.
Marilyn's response to Ricë's latest journal spank is here.

My trick is to draw in pencil, then ink it, then erase the pencil marks. And if you can't get all those pencil marks to disappear, paint or color the background. My friend Mary showed me how to use my pencil to measure and to draw the negative space when things get really tough.
