My Photo
Midland, Texas, United States
My name rhymes with "Lisa," I live in Midland, Texas, because it's warm and the mortgage is cheap, and of course this is my natural hair color. Of course! The EGE--The Ever-Gorgeous Earl--is my husband of 35 years. I have the best job in the world because I get to call up artists and ask them nosy questions and then write about them. I also stitch, podcast, blog, and then, in my spare time, do it all some more.

Well, Denise Has a Point

I suck at self-promotion. She didn’t SAY that, because she’s a lovely person and she would NEVER say anything like that. But I know it’s true, and I’m trying so very hard to do better, truly I am. As part of the agreement with the publishers, you know.
So I’ll try to do better about letting y’all know about the magazines. Coming out September 1st, there’s Somerset Studio,
SS
where I interview Danielle Hession, and Belle Armoire,
ba
with Mihaela Manitiu, as I said earlier.
There’s also Belle Armoire Jewelry, where I re-visit Amy Hanna.
BAJ
[Sorry—no extra copy of that one.]
The current issue of Art Doll Quarterly, which came out July 1st, has my interview with the fabulous Neva Waldt.

I try not to have favorites, but lord, that woman is funny! What is it about doll artists? Neva and Jodi Creager are two of the funniest people I’ve ever had the pleasure of talking to. The interviews with them were the most unprofessional things I’ve ever done, with me laughing like a crazy person and begging them to repeat things I missed. Jodi and I were on the phone for HOURS, and I finally had to tell her that she was making me laugh so hard I was going to have to get off the phone and go pee. If you ever, EVER get a chance to meet either of them or take a class or listen to them talk, go for it.
The autumn issue of Altered Couture has my last column in it:

And Art Quilting Studio, which is new this year and currently publishes in June and December—the premiere issue (June) has my interview with quilter Denyse Schmidt, and the cover looks like this:

Denyse, by the way, contributed to the fabulous book Drawing From Life:  The Journal as Art, by Jennifer New. Did you know that Jennifer also wrote Dan Eldon, The Art of Life? One of my all-time favorite books.
OK, I think that’s it for what’s out there currently.
For years now, I’ve been carrying the extra copies of magazines in the truck, giving them to people who express interest in the magazines but haven’t ever read them. In theory, this is a great idea. In practice, not so much:  the places we go where we meet people who’re interested in this kind of stuff are usually places—Santa Fe, New Orleans—where we don’t have the vehicle and are walking. And most certainly NOT carrying a stack of magazines with us. So I thought this would be a good way to find homes for the extra copies I sometimes have. It seems like one of those Everybody Wins things:  I’m happy because I find new homes for things. Some of y’all will be happy because you’ll get a free magazine. The publishers will be happy because it generates interest in up-coming issues.
Yay!
Now:  if anyone out there wants to give me a nudge the last week or so of the month, just before the new issues come out, I’ll let you know what interviews are coming up. It makes me feel kind of weird, though, for some reason:  like I can just imagine everyone going, “Yeah, yeah, so you wrote something. And I just spent 10 hours re-building a truck engine and all I want is for you to entertain me, dammit! Screw the self-promotion and make me snort beer out my nose, lazy wench!”
Or something like that, although I’m pretty sure none of y’all would call me “wench.” I think the cut-off for that, age-wise, passed me long, long ago, thank you jesus.
And now back to hanging bulletin boards. Two down, three to go:  what IS it about putting holes in freshly-painted walls that’s scarier than a root canal? It literally makes me SWEAT. Argh.

For myself I do like knowing when interesting folks are writing interesting things in interesting magazines... even if I can't afford to read them all. :-)

It's only a few months since I purched my first Artful Blogging. Upon finding your blog a few weeks ago, was soon wondering where you are published, when are the magazines coming out....ETC. So please DO tell!
I think of a "wench" as a daring, experienced woman and it takes some years to reach that ripeness. She's got some years on her. teehee

I totally understand your feelings about making holes in freshly painted walls. I feel the same way.

Well, thank you for finally doing this! Now I don't have to hunt and peck for your articles, which I admit I've done, not only because you introduce us to cool artists, but also because I enjoy re-writing the article in my head, envisioning how you'd write if it were published on your blog instead. I'm hoping we'd find out what made you laugh so hard you had to go pee...

Great to see Jennifer's books mentioned here too - her Drawing from Life is my favorite art journal book ever!

aimee, there are Things I'd Never Tell--fortunately for us all, my "memory" totally sucks, so all the things about which i was sworn to secrecy are long, long gone. well, except for that one thing. . . .

and i've gotta tell you: sometimes i think of the way i'd tell the story if it were just for me and y'all, and man! the things i have to tone down! a lot of artists--i mean a LOT--cuss just like we do. they're fabulous and hilariously funny, but you can't put "fuck" in the magazines. oh, if you COULD: you'd want to MARRY these people. they're that groovy. and OPINIONS? omigod. we totally schmooze.

I wouls love to read some magazines. I get Studios, Sew Somerset ect. But seeing as I start Chemo next week - a new read would be great! And yes, I did make my own Arty Chemo bag! It was fun.
You do a great job Rice. :)

Well I'm very far behind in reading your posts, Rice, but once I start (I have you in my Google Reader) I can't stop until I've read all the most recent ones.

I was just thinking the other day when I was reading one of your interviews (I think it was in the
Art Doll Quarterly), how funny it is that your Professional Writing is so different from The Real You. And then I feel kind of Cool and With It because I kind of "know" you through your blog!

And how come we've never met, anyway? We're both West Texans, after all! ;^) I actually spent my earliest years in Midland, although the only thing I remember about it is the Dust and the Tumbleweeds. Do you still have those? Well, OK, this was a LONG time ago, so maybe the Dust has settled by now.

Now I'm moving from Houston to San Antonio, so maybe there's a LEETLE more of a chance that I'll get to meet you some day.

P.S. Between you and my sister, I have now joined the ranks of Women Who Say Fuck! (only in private and among friends, though ... and only on Alternate Tuesdays. Uhhh, I guess I still have a ways to go.)

Please never stop blogging ... and making me laugh!
