I've had great fun working with Jesse on a bunch of different projects this year. He's just the best--creative, professional, just a really nice guy.
For this podcast, I wanted him to talk about something besides the usual things he's always asked to talk about--you'll be able to find out more about that later, so check back--so I asked him about some things he'd mentioned in our earlier conversations. At one point, he and I had talked about what it's like to walk around in a place where you don't really look like everybody else, so I asked him about that.
To find out more about Jesse, check out his website. To listen to the podcast, as always: go to iTunes and download it from "Notes from the Voodoo Lounge," or click on that link over there in the sidebar, or--if it shows up for you (I hope it does, but it doesn't always show up for everyone)--click on the little player below.

i could watch him all day! i think it's wonderful that he does demos. i hope to take a class someday. it was interesting how he talked about the way he approaches painting. i wish i could be that free. it made me think of the time i attacked a large unsuccessful painting with a ribbed athletic sock. i accidentally ended up with a cool texture and saved the painting. it was fun too. he really does inspire me paint again. gracias, cindy
thanks for listening, sweetie!
I live my own unique creative artistic life. But I never needed the tattoos or colored hair to validate what I do. Maybe that makes me less acceptable to those who do need the body art to compliment their artistic work. Maybe it's harder as to fit in the aristic world if your outward presence is ordinary. Personally I prefer to be invisible and let my art stand on it's own.
i don't know any artist who uses the body art to reinforce their work. i know artists who dress all in black (not as in goth, but as in simple-and-easy-to-wear), and i know people like jesse--and like me. you'll note that he said he looked different at 13, way before he got involved with art. i think it's more a mindset, a way of looking at the world. neither way is right or wrong. i'm just happy i'm able to decorate myself~~
it seems natural that an artist would use his body or hair or clothes as a form of self expression. body decoration and wearing jewelry have been around since the beginning of time. it was not about promoting art back then and i don't think it is about that now. good artists respect each other no matter what their "look" is. colorful clothes and jewelry make me feel good even when i'm just doing the everyday things. sometimes i am the art of the day whether anyone sees me or not. i don't think i want to be invisible. it's an attitude of expression i think.
no one needs tatoos to reinforce there artistic life or to be creative, but when you imagine yourself a certain way - like perhaps with tattoos its nice to go as far as you wish or imagine to be yourself.. i grew up with a biker dad so tattoos were part of my life since i was born and just seemed natural to me.. also my tattoos do reinforce my work, all the tattoos i have are of my own work and symbolism, permanent reminders of who ive become, and been and how ive arrived here.. each symbol marks a lesson learned, each painting a marker in time with its own identity and lesson.. for me somethings are worth remembering. as many people like to remain invisable i just wish we could all look however we wanted visably and just be judged on our actions.. then we would all be invisable.. this is why i look how i want and go out of my way to connect and explain myself to others.. and this is why i judge people on there actions, rather than there words or appearance..
A fascinating Podcast. I love to learn more about artists I like and to get a better sense of what makes them tick. Thanks Rice and Jesse for a great listen.
