My name rhymes with "Lisa," I live in Midland, Texas, because it's warm and the mortgage is cheap, and of course this is my natural hair color. Of course! The EGE--The Ever-Gorgeous Earl--is my husband of 35 years. I have the best job in the world because I get to call up artists and ask them nosy questions and then write about them. I also stitch, podcast, blog, and then, in my spare time, do it all some more.

Faux Shearling Cape-ish Thing: Finished!

OK! Here it is! Yay!

If it had been left to me, I'd have NEVER gotten photos of this behemoth. Let's just say it is *not* something you'd want to roll up and try to stuff in your carry-on luggage, but it's also not something you'd want to try to wear on the plane, either. It's big, it's bulky, it's awkward.

On the other hand, it's very, very warm. Plus shimmery! Those ribbons are so cool when they move--I'm going to try to get a little video so you can see. Don't hold your breath, though--that would require that I remember to take the FlipVideo and use it. Hahahahahahaha. But I'm going to get better about that, because I'm thinking of a TON of things I want to show you.

Anyway. So here's the front.

The back.

More shots.
And The EGE also got some shots of shoes/boots (various days--I don't carry spares and trade out in the middle of a cup of coffee)--Borns, on sale:
Jewelry--
bracelets by Alita Pearl
the heart with wings was a gift from Catherine Witherell
A bag from my favorite shop in New Orleans on Decatur street--
That's it for now--I'm working on the black silk coat still, still beading the cuffs. I do that only at night when we're watching Netflix or in the morning with that first cup of coffee, so it's taking f-o-r-e-v-e-r. I'm really ready to be done with it. But after this second cuff? I've still got the collar--aieeeeeeeee~~

Wow. I am so impressed. It looks fantastic!!!

So, you dyed the fabric, then cut it out and sewed on all the ribbons. did you serge the edges?

The cut is great. It is all about the cut isn't it? It drapes great on you. But it isn't just the cut, the ribbons make it. They take it up another notch.

Very inspiring.

Love this! The style is similar to something (I've never known exactly what to call it!) I have that I wear to keep warm in my art room. I got mine at the Goodwill Bins a long time ago and lately I have been entertaining the thought of trying to make something similar from a pashima. I think you have inspired me to give it a try! Thank you for sharing.

The cape is beautiful. Love the fringe, especially.

The cape you altered is stunning, beautiful!

Off-topic: You wrote a thoughtful and encouraging letter (Advanced Style) to Philip in S.C. about how to handle gay-bashing bullies. Today, in a medical waiting room, there was a man --- knitting! We struck up a conversation about knitting history. We talked about needlepoint star, Rosie Greer. Did I forget to mention Kaffe Fasset? Your advice about not being restricted by superficial rules helped me too. Keep spreading the word!

Thanks, y'all! You're so sweet, so now I have to explain in more detail as a disclaimer! This was a little over two yards of the shearling stuff on sale for $7 a yard. It's polyester--shhhhh! I hate polyester, but I had an idea I wanted to play with, so I bought it. All I did was cut it up the front, make a hole for the neck, and then make the bottom part kind of wavy instead of straight--so it wouldn't look so box-like and blanket-ish. The only actually cool thing I did was those 133 ribbons--measuring, cutting, ironing, sewing, and tying. Really easy--if you want something warm and snuggly, you might check the clearance table at your local fabric store--this one has been through the laundry with no raveling--it's not serged or hemmed or ANYTHING. Just cut. That's it. Pretty cool for polyester, huh?

The boots are Borns, easily the most comfortable boots I've ever put on my feet. I knew as soon as I tried them on I had to have them; good thing for me they were at Nordstrom's Rack and half off or I would have whimpered.

Hiya Ricë,
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!!!! Ya have such skills. I betcha ya real warm wearing it huh? How many people asked you where ya bought it? lol

I had to post the rest of my comment here.(Couldn't find the Clairice post, Sorry.)
I LOVE the cat litter box! I think ya should patten that idea. lol Never thought to use one of those totes as a litter box. Imagine how much mess stays inside & not on ya floor. Ya so smart!
Clarice is a beauty whether or not she's groomed. I can see how much she loves her new home. She was one smart cookie to scope out ya place.
Now question... Do ya say Clarice like in the movie "Silence of the Lambs" or do ya say Claricë like how ya name is said? Thought it was a good question. I know she doesn't have the ë over her e in her name but was curious.
Hope you and the Ever Gorgeous Earl are doing well.
Hugs,Poe

The EGE says thanks!

We say it like in "Silence of the Lambs" except sometimes, when I do indeed say Claricë, just to be cute. She doesn't think so, though.

The litter box is a necessity, since Moe, being a guy, likes to pee standing up. Instead of squatting to pee, he pees as if he's spraying on the side of the box. If it weren't this tall, he'd pee over the edge. Maxwell did that, too, as he got older (and his knees didn't want to crouch), and I wish I'd thought of this then. It's perfect for keeping everything contained, although of course they do still manage to track out cat litter. I first saw the idea in a store where cats lived. Unfortunately, the people there seemed to assume that a large bin meant they didn't have to clean it as often. We scoop these out--scooping out wet litter and solid waste both--3-4 times a day. Just like flushing a toilet--you don't leave that sitting around the house. Gah!

Oops. I ranted in the comments. Sorry.

Anyway--yes, it works great!

I like it and the color totally works with your hair color and style. I know that stuff is warm. They make jackets out of it and it's soft. If it makes you feel good it's worth it. I love those boots - they look brand new. You look good! I saw that you have your ring on and it has lots of company. I can't believe you ironed the ribbons!

You are an inspiration. I watched your needle felting video and that is how I came upon your blog. I love the creative items you have done. I was wondering if you hand stitched the trim on your brown coat?

Oh, Ricë, this is WONDERFUL!!! The Cape of Good Hope, or good kharma. Either way - what FUN!! Might have to look into something similar for myself, she said looking out at the 5th measurable snowfall of the year. At this rate, I'm coming down there to buy the house next door...

Ricë said...

holly, we'd LOVE to have y'all as neighbors! well-loved dogs would be a bonus--come on over!

elizabeth, if you mean the brown leather coat, yes, i did do the stitching by hand. it was remarkably easy, perhaps because the leather is old--? not sure, but it was easier to get the needle through than i anticipated.

The coat is fabulous! Love the color and I agree with the previous commentor...the ribbons kick it up a whole 'nother notch! I was so happy to get my coffee, "open the door" (turn on the Internet)...and join u in the Voodoo Cafe. It's my "me time" every day. Surprised and pleased to see you sharing with all us girls....and guys, too probably.

Love, love, LOVE the cape. But seeing that close-up of the ribbons made my eye twitch.

I had some of that ribbon - and I used it on a package and it was a pistol to iron. The thought of you ironing 133-ish pieces... yikes!

Still - it's gorgeous! Well done!

Ricë said...

Thanks! Yeah, the ribbon-ironing = totally OCD-ish. But I've used this ribbon before and know the only way to get the full effect of the shimmer is to get out the kinks from having it rolled in a ball. And this stuff was not cheap--good grief, no. The worst thing about it is that it picks--it catches on EVERYTHING and pulls, and since my fingers are dry and have pieces of skin all over from where I've poked them with pins and needles, you can imagine the mess. But it's done. Unless, of course, I decide to add more ribbons. . . .? Aieeeee!!

Stunning - the fringe is just perfect. And your jewelry is fabulous, especially the rings. I'm slowly building my collection, but sadly the great little art gallery near us closed many years ago - it was my main source of cool jewelry.

This is AWESOME. One of my favorite combinations, and so ME. I am cape woman for sure. I have about five of them and always looking for more. I guess maybe it makes me feel like Batman. I love the fringe. This is really a fantastic piece that looks particularly good on your model-like figure. Bravo!
