~~Cut off the neck band, being careful not to cut into the t-shirt itself:
~~On these, there's this part that wants to roll out.
You want it to stay flat and to the inside. Hence the beading.
This t is an odd chartreuse. The EGE suggested darker green beads, and I used dark green thread so you could see what I'm doing. You'd want to get thread closer in color to the fabric, I'm guessing. I use regular thread, doubled and knotted. I use this rather than beading thread because I used this on the very first journal skirt I ever made, sewing a bunch of beads on the back yoke, and those babies have stayed on there through dozens of washings and years of wearing. So, yeah: that's the way I sew on beads. The beading thread? Stays in its cute little tin container in the drawer.
I start by sewing beads all around the front, making sure to go through all layers to hold that turn-y part flat.
At this point I go back and carefully trim away any extra part of the band that remains.
~~I like to embellish the "v" part in the front.
~~Et voilá!
I've washed the first one of these and have worn it several times, even sleeping in it, and everything's fine.So what're you waiting for? Dig out those ugly t-shirts and have some fun~~
XO

Thank you so much for showing us how to do this! :D
I hate those too high necklines. Always feels like they are choking me even when they aren't. But it always looks so terrible when you cut it out. I may have to give this a try. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing this. I'll have to try this. I've never been game enough to alter clothes...too scared I'll mess it up. Not now, shall go and get some tops to do. Thanks again for all the wonderful wisdom and inspiration that you share. Mwah!
That's really cool Rise, love what you did!
Oh, man--I should have added that you can get t-shirts from your local thrift for probably less than $1, surely less than $2. So you can experiment and go crazy and not feel like you have to be careful. Check your local Goodwill and Salvation Army--here they have half-price clothing days. Sundays and Fridays, respectively. Can't beat it, and you're helping out by buying and then helping out when you re-donate if you decide you're tired of it!
Yeah, I'm always tugging on necklines, too, even if they're not tight. Wonder why that is?
loved watching your frequently asked questions video- you are so delightful. You seem like a fun person to get to know- vulnerable, funny, brave, and confident- such a great combination. thanks for sharing the t-shirt idea.
This time I am ready because I need to clean out my t-shirt drawer!
