My name rhymes with "Lisa," I live in Midland, Texas, because it's warm and the mortgage is cheap, and of course this is my natural hair color. Of course! The EGE--The Ever-Gorgeous Earl--is my husband of 35 years. I have the best job in the world because I get to call up artists and ask them nosy questions and then write about them. I also stitch, podcast, blog, and then, in my spare time, do it all some more.

A Gift from Deb Dugan

I realized yesterday when I wrote a post about artists and showed some of the art on my walls over at CreateMixedMedia.com that I hadn't shown it to y'all yet. What's up with that? I took the photographs immediately and had them here, but somehow I never posted it.

You remember my podcast with Deb, right? It's here, and it was so much fun. And a couple days later, this arrived in the mail:
Isn't this gorgeous? It's a watercolor of paperwhites (and I even knew that! And I am to gardening what what Sarah Palin is to nuclear physics, pretty much) and rocks. It has rocks! And this is what is so cool and touches me so much: Deb sent me rocks. And remember Jeanie Thorn? Who also sent me rocks?

Rocks, you ask? What's up with rocks? Well, what's up is that I love rocks. Not gravel rocks, but, you know, cool rocks. Not polished faceted rocks, but smooth river rocks and sparkly geode rocks and stripey rocks. You know:  cool rocks. It's wonderful when someone sends you a gift, no matter what it is, because you're touched that they thought about you and wanted to send you something. But when they remember that you like something, when they remember you said you liked purple or coconut or whatever? Man. It makes you feel all fuzzy, you know? It's like this connection you've made, and it's like someone really gets you.

(I'm guessing it would be a completely different thing if you said, "Oh, my, you know, I really like diamonds!" or "I just adore fur!" That would be kind of a different thing, I'm guessing. Not a lot of warm fuzziness there.)

Hey! This makes me think: when I get caught up today (snort. gasp. choke. coughcoughcough), I'm going to go around the house and photograph the rocks. I have bowls of rocks and rocks on shelves and necklaces with rocks. Yep. Going to do that.

[I write it here so that, if I don't (and I'm pretty sure it's not going to happen today, but I'm *hoping*), maybe someone will nag me, ever so gently.]

Thank you, Deb~~I love this!

We share a love for rocks. :) I have rocks I picked up when I lived in Texas in 2003 on my windowsill here in Kitchener, Ontario. It reminds me of that day of tubing on the Guadalupe river and even when it's driving snow and - 30C I can conjure up the warmth of the sun just by holding those rocks in my hands.

Rocks hold the spirit of place, I think.

Thanks for sharing this lovely insight into who you are. <3

I too love rocks. I used to build totems on our morning walks, but others didn't seen to like that. Too bad for them. And, yes, I have bowls and shelves and other places filled with beautiful rocks. They ROCK!

What a beautiful piece. I always admire artists who can work in watercolor. I've tried it, and it makes me want to pull my hair out! LOL I just don't have the patience.

I love rocks too! I have a "lucky" rock from a nearby stream that I carry in my pocket. It is wonderful to connect with people who "get" you!

~Thank you Ricë ~

Sharon, it does make me want to pull my hair out sometimes too :-D

Have you ever read the book "Everybody Needs a Rock" by Byrd Baylor? It's one I read to my kids over and over and then kept a hardcover copy for myself. It is lovely and peaceful and magical. Your library probably has it. It's quite wonderful.
