Oh, my little chickadees, you've heard me rave about Advanced Style before. Many times, probably. It's one of my favorite blogs, and not just because I love the people involved, like Debra Rappaport, whom you met here. No, I love more than anything the affirmation that you don't have to give up and be dowdy just because you're over 50. Or 70. Or 90. You can have fun with how you look and the clothes you wear, and you can spread joy just by going out and being yourself. Ari, the creator of Advanced Style, has shown us that, and we love him for it.
So of course I had to talk to him. You knew that, right?
And here he is:

Awesome! I've been reading Advanced Style since you mentioned it. Love those Idiosyncratic Fashionistas! I hope to have a few ounces of the style these ladies (and occasional gentlemen)display. Thanks!
Since Advanced Style is one of my favorite blogs I think this is one of the best interviews you've done.
I'm a couple of decades older than you and it has yet to occur to me that I'm too "Old" for fashion, or much of anything else for that matter.
Darla
Thanks! It was fun to do--I'm such a fan. Darla, I always think everyone else is younger than I am. Not that I feel old; just that I seem to have been around on the planet for a long time.
Awesome...haven't listened yet...saving it for tonight so I can fill my head with good things at work... But, I have checked out the site and decided that when I grow up, I want to be JUST like the zippy little lady in the pink, orange and chartreuse (?), carrying her bags down the street, rocking the orange headband... She looks like she is loving life and would be someone I'd love to know!
She's my favorite, too, Marcie. Or Ilona. I love Ilona!
This podcast was amazing!!! I colored my hair (I'm 60 in a couple of weeks) on a whim in November just before leaving for Europe for the first time. I really like it. I dress conservatively for work but the kids (I'm a substitute teacher) seem to respond to my spirit and my true self more than to what I wear. ALL the high schoolers "know" somehow that I was a hippie. I am now encouraged by Ari Seth to take more risks. I used to be a wild and crazy thrift store fashionista and will take measures to get back there now.
When my husband taught, he wore school colors and khakis. Now that he's retired and subs, he still wears khakis but now with bright dyed shirts and socks. The kids remember what color he wore last time they saw him, and some of the high school boys even compliment his colors--a BIG deal, given their usual attitude. Now I've got him iPod wristband holders in colors with earphones to match (purple, green, orange, pink), and the kids think he's way cool. Or, rather, "sick."
Thank you! I love this! Like Sarajane, I've been following Advanced Style since you first mentioned it. What an inspiration you and all the faboo fashionistas on Advanced Style are! You all make me happy and proud to be over 50.
:0)
Ari is such a charmer. I had to get a sponge out and mop up the puddle near my computer after listening because all your gushing leaked out! thanks for sharing.
Gushing will work--whatever I need to do to be encouraging~~
Another fan over here. I've always felt older than everyone and I'm still on my 30s. Same as you Ricë, I feel that I've been around for ages. Love the advance style, it's my favorite, i love it love it love it.
Wonderful podcast, Rice! I am 58 and after listening to this wonderful give and take between you and Mr. Cohen I am *so* inspired to finally let my hair down and live a little through my clothing choices...and, when I get to where I want to be,"poo" on those who think me deranged...
So glad Ari has inspired you--he's doing great stuff for lots and lots of people~~
You did it!! YAYYYY!
Thank you Rice!!
I have been procrastinating my morning 'work' but now I have a carrot to get me through it!!! You are the reward when I'm done.
