Midland, Texas, United States
My name rhymes with "Lisa," I live in Midland, Texas, because it's warm and the mortgage is cheap, and of course this is my natural hair color. Of course! The EGE--The Ever-Gorgeous Earl--is my husband of 35 years. I have the best job in the world because I get to call up artists and ask them nosy questions and then write about them. I also stitch, podcast, blog, and then, in my spare time, do it all some more.

Podcast with Stampington Editor in Chief Christen Olivarez

I know Christen as my editor over at Somerset Studio and Belle Armoire Jewelry, but she also edits two other magazines, oversees all 30 titles at Stampington, and is Editor in Chief and Director of Publishing.

All this, and she's not yet 30. Pretty cool, huh?
As you can imagine, finding a time to talk isn't easy. We say we're going to talk on the phone, but it doesn't happen. We're kind of like travelers waving madly to each other on trains speeding past each other on the tracks. But that's OK--there's always email. A lot of email--as Christen says in the podcast, she gets lots and lots of email. And mail, as in actual, real mail. Oh, my, the mail. You can see a photo of one day's Stampington deliveries here.

But we did find time to talk, and I asked Christen about her background and what she does all day, about how to submit ideas to her and what kinds of photos work and where she finds new artists--and, and, and~~

Rice, before this evening, I'd never once listened to an entire podcast before...but when I saw you'd created one with Christen from Stampington & Co., I had to check it out, and listened from beginning to end! I've sent some pieces to Stampington in the past several months, and have been wondering how they go about selecting the work to be included in the msagazines; this interview was very enlightening! Thanks for posting this!

Great interview-love Christen and it was fun hearing even more about the inside workings of Stampington and publishing in general. Looking forward to new things from them as well!

Isn't it scarey to 'let go' of an original piece of artwork and send it in? How do you do that. I mean what if for some reason you don't get it back? Or...am i just too attached to the art work. LOL!

Thanks for listening, Jenny! I hope you'll find some more that grab you, too~~

Thanks, Pam. Lots of new stuff in the works, I'm sure--

I don't know, Deb. If you're making things just for yourself, then I think it might be scary to let it go. But if you're creating art you want to share, then that would be something else, I think.

Really enjoyed the interview, gave me some insights and helped me to make some changes to my blog and flickr. Appreciate both of you taking the time to inform and encourage.

Christen sounds like a lovely and humble director at Stampington and so very refreshing after the ego driven and inefficient J. Doh!
Thanks for the podcast.

Really great interview! Rice (apologies, I don't know how to get the correct 'e' on the keyboard), both you and Christen were great! It is one of the most informative and fun interviews I have heard.

I really enjoy your articles too!
