Oh, yeah, you *knew* I had to do it, right? Of course! Y'all are fabulous, and every single one of you deserves a present. Alas, I don't have the budget for that. I do, however, have an extra copy of The Brand New Book right here, and you can win it. Here's how:
1) Watch the movie. Here's the short version, and here's the longer version. Guess which I like better?
2) Tell us what you liked about it. Yeah, this is shameless indulgence on my part, but I worked hard on this little movie, and I love it, and I've watched it (admiringly! lovingly! so, so proudly! not to say "obsessively") so many times the music has insinuated itself into my brain in a frightening manner, so I want others to be there with me. Plus I just like knowing someone's watching it, you know?
3) Check back on Friday, September 9th, to find out if you won. If you don't check back, I will curse you and your horse. The one you rode in on. Then I will tell everyone else you're the reason I won't ever, ever, ever do any more give-aways, never mind that I have something very cool I want to give away later. You don't want to be That Person.
Sound good? I thought so. And for more book-related reading, check out Yo Lisa Lisa's blog post here. Man, I love that woman~~smart, funny, cute. We tried to adopt her, but her family wanted too much in the way of compensation. (If you follow all the links she provides and read the comments as she suggests, you'll get the whole story. If not, well, never mind. Just read the post.)
See you next Friday! Oh, sure--I'll see you way before then, most of you. But for those who'll come back only to see if they won, see you then--Good luck!

So I watched the long one. Hey it was not very long! Looks like you had a lot of fun with the map, car and airplane visual aides. And the spoons! Oh, I loved the spoons. But best of all was the happy faces and thinking of all the great things that were at each stop to see and do and learn! What Fun! See you on Friday!
I, of course, watched them both. more than once - and yes, the music got to me too! I like the long one - cause I have been to several art unraveled venues and like you was SO curious about the people that attend and WHY. My favorite part is seeing all the people - they come as individuals but leave with something special. like creative friendships that last forever. really. it shows in their faces that you and E capture. well, I liked that. and the red explorer loaded up ready to go on a trip. GREAT job and see you next year! oh wait. friday!
I, too watched the long one (which really wasn't that long!). I like the way you and Earl captured the joy on the participants' and teachers' faces at each of the venues. AND I loved Jesse Reno's paint hand!
I watched the longer one and of course I enjoyed seeing all the wonderful workshops. However the little car moving across the map is an inspired touch and very entertaining. Great job.
I watched the long one - twice! The first time was at my friend Melissa Manley's blog - happy to see her creative talented smiling face pop up a few times! Then I cam e here. I think the film is tantalizing, its a little like an addiction fix, makes me want to go ...NOW. Nice to see people I know and love ( MElissa, Keith) and put faces to the podcasts of yours I thoroughly enjoy. No I am not trying to flatter you so I can win! Just my humble opinion...
Well I liked it ALL, the whole 5 minutes and 23 seconds of both version's!! The SUV and plane running around on the map, how clever. Never have been to an art retreat, but lookng at trying to attend one up in Washington around 2013. It will take me that long to save the $$. Thanx for sharing and congrats on your new book.
I watched the long one that wasn't so long. I love Jen's expression with your book and how you captured the moments. The pictures moved with the music. Oh how fun! Can hardly wait for Friday. Oh...guess what? Thomas Mann is now having workshops here in NOLA! Yay!
I watched both. The 1st one made me want more. You made more and I want even MORE! I think you like the 2nd one the best because you made it!! You don't have to have a reason! The fun! Everyone was having FUN!! That was my favorite part. And friends...everyone has a connection and it shows. Thought the music was great, and the little car and airplane...super fun!! Very creative!!
Howdy Rice,
Watched them both - my fave of both was the actual opening up of the box of books. The anticipation and 'the reveal' - VERY exciting!
Reminded me of the end of the movie 'Julie and Julia' where Julia Childs opens up her box of first books. How excited WERE you to open that box of books?!?!?!?!?!
Also loved the little car and plane on the map - great transitions.
The short version is my favorite.
Hope I win the book - pick me! Pick me!
Peace,
Mary Lou 'LuLu'
Would love for you to visit my blog, and comment on some of my art when you have a moment or 2!

www.scrap-a-thon.com - Scrap-A-Thon Scrapbooking Retreat Oct 14-16, 2011!
I watched both of the lovely videos. And, yes, the music does leap into your brain with happiness blips that will insinuate themselves into my dreams!
My favorite, and I gather your favorite, was the longer version. I adored seeing the unfettered joy on the faces of BOTH mean and women as they did something that maybe they thought that they couldn't do: ART!
That's what art is all about, isn't it? Discovery, joy, laughter, fun, silliness, sadness, meaning, soul, life; I'm sure I'm missing a few adjectives.
I also loved the shots of the areas that you were able to include in the longer version, they added a delightful touch of local flavor to each segment.
What got me the most, Rice, was the fun, the sweet sound effects and the spoons!
Winning this book would mean so much to a week that was a major challenge for me. Just a few words tell you what you need to know: Zoe the feline & fleas. Back on Friday (and before) with bells on!
Me too, watched them both lol. Loved the music, love the airplane, but most of all love all those wonderful art retreats! Wow, wish I was there, haven't been to one yet! Everyone seems to be having so much fun! thanks
I watched them both-very clever. (i'll be hearing that music the next 48 hrs) I liked the second one because it shows what fun the attendee's are having. {i'm guessing it was your fave because you are in it more :)}
If the book captures the happiness as much as your video did it will be fabulous!
Loved seeing friends, lots of happy smiling friends......
Thought the cheesehead (Wisconsin) section was wonderful too as I still consider it home all these many years later,.....which is probably lucky as Southerners will forever consider me a Yankee!
I loved the longer version--more opportunity to see all those happy faces!! And that's what really tantalized me--everyone looked like they were having the time of their lives!! I would love to be able to afford an art retreat. I'd love to win a copy of your book but if I don't, I'll be buying it. I own your other books and LOVE them!!
I watched them both and i like the long one. I like the music and ofcourse all the smiling faces.
I've never been to an art retreat so i found it all very interesting. I would love to read your book. Please count me in the giveaway!
Hands down I liked the look on the faces of the folk flipping through the pages of the art book. But overall I loved the visual of the map background with the van and plane. Tres cool. Well I enjoyed this whole post and while my computer is dead in the water I will attempt to remember to pop on by on the 9th (I'll go to my daughters' house to get wired for sound). *smiles* Norma
p.s. Rice you rock as usual.
I'm not sure which one I watched, but I loved the photo montage of one person twirling another. That was fun! I'm also equally jealous at all the fun you had at the art fests. That's on my bucket lsit!
I am not entering because I live in New Zealand and the postage is a killer, AND I have won something from you before :) But I have looked at the longer video and I loved it, so am commenting anyway.
I loved the music, my master 8 said "cool music" and came over to watch (good training) and I loved the air plane and car on the map (you really traveled an insane amount that year!). I enjoyed the little pop up screens announcing what was coming up. My favourite shots were the ones of the arrival of the book.
A lot of smiles were had watching. I could sense the fun, and the connections made.
Ooh, now you KNOW I'd like to win this one. What I loved about the video(s) is how much fun everybody seems to be having. The laughter on a lot of faces. And that plain thing in between destinations made me smile ;-) It also made me think that 2010 must have been an exhausting year for you and the EGE ;-)
LOL, I said 'plain', but meant 'plane', hope you got that. Oh well, I have the excuse of not being a native speaker of the language at least.
I like the long one best, and I know you do, too. In the short one it was difficult to read the word cards because they went by so fast. Had to back up and pause a couple of times. Both are great videos, though!
I jumped right to the long one. Loved the car and plane of the map. And it was a lot of fun picking out the faces of the people I know.
Seth said what I was going to say-I liked having little peeks of people I know. It's good to see them happy and making art. The map part was adorable.
BTW, I asked my library to purchase the book and they said NO. I am completely miffed. THey claim that the scope of it is too narrow for their collection. I wrote a long email back explaining why in truth it's NOT. (Nicely, I might add.) They are ignoring me. I am especially irritated about this because 1. they have all your other books in their collection and 2. this is the first time in YEARS that they said no.
I tried Rice. I hope I win so I can wave my copy in their face. Silly people will buy all kinds of religious or ESL material but can't buy one mixed media art book? *SO* not impressed!
Now can we have a 15-minute version with actual video clips in it? (I know - greedy me!) I like the longer one. It struck me that all the people in the photos are either a) concentrating intensely or 2) smiling hugely. WHAT FUN!!
I watched the long one...why miss out on something this good! Loved the music, the fast pace of the video...wow just watching all of this is exhausting...I can only image how you all felt! I've always considered going to an art retreat...this may just help me over the edge!
..watched the long one....
...(after realising it WASN'T the one with you doing FAQ's that I needed to watch...Doh!)
...and definitely...certainly...without any possible doubt.....it was THE SPOONS!
Great to see folk having such fun :-)
I think that you liked the longer one best, because it included even more fun.
I loved the dancing/twirling towards the end of the video the most!
Congratulations on the new book!
I loved them both but naturally prefered the longer version with more snippets to enjoy. Whilst trying (and failing!!) to save up to come 'across the pond' and enjoy a retreat in the USA - your fly-on-the-wall insights into these wonderful workshops inspire to create just a tiny portion of that here in Derbyshire. Can't thank you and the artists enough for sharing..my favourite bit? the dancing! such joy!!
I enjoyed them both. Everyone looked like they were having so much fun - and getting their hands dirty! That is what art is all about, at least for me.
Hi Rice;
I loved both videos, but if I have to guess....I think u liked the long version best. What I loved the most about both of them is I can FEEL the creative energy by watching, and I know that's one of the main reasons people gather and flock to them, one day I will experience it, but until then hopefully your book will satisfy lol! Thanx for the opportunity and your generosity :)
Well, I have to admit, those toy cars are really cute. But, what did I like the most? Well, Art and Soul Va is where I got to meet your awesome self and the EGE. And, now I get to see the fruits of your labor. I would love my very own autographed copy of your book! I have been waiting for it for two years! Congratulations, Rice!
The long version, hands down, is the best. I live cars and planes and maps and the idea of taking on a road trip of that magnitude makes me giddy with delight.
After too many years of not taking myself seriously as an artist, I'm finally trading half a spare bedroom for a studio space. It's a big, scary step (especially since it will cost $$$). One of my hopes is that I can someday use this space for small workshops. I'd love a copy of your book for inspiration. You've provided so much through the years. Thank you.
Hi,
I loved the longer version. I did a scrapbook of a family trip & used maps to show where we went. The movie remined me of the time I went to a Art Cloth Symposium at the Textile Center in Minneapolis. I felt like I was among my tribe. We spoke the same language and I fit in. It is life changing. Thanks for sharing your experiences and I hope I win!
Diane
I think the longer one was better because it had more 'people' pictures. Here are the things I liked: 1) The little red SUV and map were awesome. I liked them because that's how I actually go on vacation. I liked the plane, too, but can't afford to fly on either a real or plastic one. 2)Jesse Reno's painted hand. 3) The EGE really is cute!
Long one - shows more people having fun - and the editing (your forte) is smoother - great job - EGE captured the great retreat energy.
Alas, my aged computer won't allow me to watch either video. It turns then into stuttering incomprehensibility. But I am sure both versions are fabulous, and it would be hard to make a choice between the two.
I will have to wait and buy the book instead of winning one...but that's okay. :=)
