My name rhymes with "Lisa," I live in Midland, Texas, because it's warm and the mortgage is cheap, and of course this is my natural hair color. Of course! The EGE--The Ever-Gorgeous Earl--is my husband of 35 years. I have the best job in the world because I get to call up artists and ask them nosy questions and then write about them. I also stitch, podcast, blog, and then, in my spare time, do it all some more.

The Orangey-Red Eileen Fisher Dress

Remember this one? Got on clearance--I think it had been worn and returned: the back was badly wrinkled. No problem for me--I popped it in the washer and dryer and it was just fine. But the length was wrong--not a flattering length at all.
So I shortened it, meaning I had to also shorten the separate lining. Just an inch or so--just enough to make it perfect:
See the difference? Now it hits at the bottom of my kneecap. That's often the most flattering length--it covers knees, which are seldom beautiful, and it reveals the largest part of the calf, which usually has the most shape and will keep thin-ish legs from looking scrawny (see top photo for stick calves) and will show off the shape of more curvaceous calves. This is the kind of stuff I seem to have learned and internalized from my mother, which is very odd: I forgot/discarded/ignore much of what she told me about style, but some seems to have stuck with me. Other stuff--like the balance of loose with fitted (if you have something fitted on the bottom, you pick something looser on top and vice versa), I picked up Elsewhere. I keep what works for me and ignore everything else. Like advice about Spanx, for instance. Not from my mother--she would rec. a good girdle, I'm sure.

And the pin-tucks didn't all lie flat. Now, I know how some people treat linen, but that's not how I treat it. I like it casual and natural. No pressing! So I sewed on tomato-y orange-ish beads to encourage the pin-tucks to Do the Right Thang.
I think the beads dress it up just enough. Not blingy, not stuffy. The fit is always going to be casual and a little baggy because it has those kangaroo pockets right in front at the waist, but it works for me. Especially for what little I paid for it.

Let's go see what else I can show later--The EGE photographed all the stuff I've finished lately, but I didn't want to do it in one long whack of a post with umteen jillion photos.

That's a cute dress. You can't go wrong with Eileen Fisher because it's so durable, but clearance is the only way to go. TOO EXPENSIVE. Good tip on hemlines. I'm having trouble figuring that out. I don't want my knees to show or the little spider veins right above my left calf.

That is the most flattering dress I have seen you wear (here)! Looks like it fits you to the T. Wonderful alteration. Thank you for the tips on hem length.

Ooh I am excited! More clothes coming!
I like the dress too. Isn't it great when it doesn't need loads of stuff, just enough to make it 'yours'.

My niece in the States puts patches on anything she buys. Patches that have drawings on them - she buys them at the market. I like this idea, but don't know if it will work for someone my age. I hate to admit that, but it is what I am thinking.

Love love that dress and the color. Looks great on you and the new length is perfect as is the now beaded top.

Thanks, y'all. You know what's funny (and pathetic)? Just now I enlarged the photo to look at it and realized OMG: can you see where I quit beading one of the tucks about halfway through? Just quit and walked away. I have no idea how that happened. Now, of course, I have to go back and finish it.

Zom, I think you can make anything work. Patches would require thinking--there are some that wouldn't work--that trying-hard-to-be-hip vibe--but there are others that would. I'm sewing denim and chambray patches on my stuff. Funky rather than hip, and it works. But I can imagine some patches that would be so very wrong, in the sense of "what was I thinking when I did this?" you know?

Thanks for thoughtfully answering that one. i really want to do patches with my drawings on them. I would love to see some photos of how you have added your patches.

(are patches 'hip'? I am a little out of touch.)

Oh wow! I love what you did to the dress! You should tell them about the alterations you made on their reviews page. Part of why they ask for the reviews is to give the design team feedback, and it looks like they could use yours ;)
