OK, so it's not my birthday. And I don't need any presents. And I don't really want you to buy me anything. But that's what this feels like: like asking people to buy you gifts. Because I have to ask you to do something for me, and I hate that. Like, seriously, seriously hate that.
But I got a note yesterday reminding me that I'm supposed to ask people to review my book. You know, like on amazon.com, where, pathetically, Destination: Creativity has zero reviews. None. Nada.
It makes me look like a slacker, and since I can't go in there and leave several dozen glowing reviews on my own, I have to ask other people, people who have read and loved the book, to do it for me.
Now, I know how other people do this: they send out emails asking friends to go write reviews. Lots of people do that. Well-known people. I have received such emails.
I cannot. Sending personal emails asking people to go say nice things about my books makes me feel like I'm standing on the corner of Hollywood and Vine in a micro-mini, fishnets, and (hear Chris Rock here!) clear heels.
So I can't do it. But I can suck it up and ask you here, in a less-in-your-face way. Even though that feels kind of icky to me, too. I am so bad at marketing. Just totally, totally lame at it. I like to think that if people like something, they will say so. That they'll go leave reviews on their own, knowing how it helps the person who wrote the book look better in the eyes of people who keep track of these kinds of things. You know: less like a slacker person.
So here's my plea for a pony and a new skateboard: if you've read Destination: Creativity and liked it (because, you know, if you read it and thought it sucked the big winkie, I'd really rather not know about it, seeing as how there's not much I can do to change your mind at this point), please leave a review on amazon.com and anywhere else that lets you review books.
Thank you. Here's a piece of birthday cake~~you want ice cream with that?

I posted a review of your new book because I really am enjoying it. It really is well done.
Thank you so much! The best birthday present EVER! (Cos you know I never got that pony~~) XO
It never occurred to me!!!
I went and did it!
Happy un-birthday!!!
After meeting you at AU (I got 2 of your great smocks) I came home and had my local book store order a copy. For someone new to the art retreat scene...I loved this book. AU was my first art retreat and your book is sure to up the attendance at future art retreats. I will post a link to your book and blog on my blog (I dont know how much that will help since its just me and some girl from Russia reading my blog!) But I would love to do something to help your cause!!
On my way to Amazon to leave a glowing review. I read the book cover to cover as soon as I got it. I'll spare you the horrendous details of it being returned to Amazon and my adventure to finally hold it in my hands. LOL. What I do want to say, is that your inspiration was effective and immediate.
After chatting with the other board members of my Polymer Clay Guild, we are in the early stages of a clay retreat early next spring. Just members this year to see how it goes, but who knows where it will lead. Thanks bunches.
Kim, that is SO cool! I can't wait to hear about the adventure of having a polymer clay retreat--baby steps, baby steps. Who knows where you'll decide to take the adventure? XO
I am glad to say that I just left my "first-ever" review on Amazon. You are so deserving of these reviews...I just wish I had thought of doing this before your post. Now you have taught me to comment on Amazon when I really like a book! Happy Birthday - Ha!
Thank you, thank you! Now I don't look like a slacker person any more! XOXO
