My Photo
Midland, Texas, United States
My name rhymes with "Lisa," I live in Midland, Texas, because it's warm and the mortgage is cheap, and of course this is my natural hair color. Of course! The EGE--The Ever-Gorgeous Earl--is my husband of 35 years. I have the best job in the world because I get to call up artists and ask them nosy questions and then write about them. I also stitch, podcast, blog, and then, in my spare time, do it all some more.

Wardrobe Redux: The White Bryn Walker Jacket-Thing

I didn't get a photo of it when it was still white, but you know what that looks like, right? White. As in: not a bit of color. So I dyed it pink, and here's what it looked like then:

(I still hate this photo--it still makes my butt look huge.)
Then I got busy with some orange linen from a Goodwill dress. It was one of those you don't feel bad about buying and cutting up because you know it's going to get bundled and shipped away because nobody is ever, ever going to buy it. I think it had a tear in it, but it also had--aieeeeee!--shoulder pads. I cut that baby up lickety-split.

I think it may be a linen-rayon blend--I love the drapeyness of it. The pockets were cut from the part that had darts--I really like the result.

What I like best about this is that it gets better every time I wash it. The jacket is 100% linen. No, I do NOT iron it. Gah. I don't iron anything unless a hem gets wonky, and then I'll iron the hem. But I don't iron my clothes. Never. Ever. I don't know *how* to iron--when I once had a job where I sometimes needed to have things that looked ironed, The EGE ironed them for me. All the Zachery Boys learned how to iron their own clothes early on. He knows how to do sleeves and stuff. Collars!

So I ironed the orange fabric to Wonder Under (I think that's the brand I use--I don't know) and cut it out and ironed it in place and then stitched with embroidery floss--pretty heavily, several rows, so it won't ravel too much and won't come loose. I did rows of stitching around the edges, too--the reason I started the embellishment in the first place was to hold the facing in place--I absolutely HATE it when facing isn't sewn down and flaps around when you don't have the garment buttoned. I can't stand it. It's why I do stitching down the front of my jackets--I don't always wear them buttoned (hardly ever) and have to keep the facings from flapping around and making me lose my mind.

First of all, welcome home!!! That jacket is too wonderful! I have been staring at the photo for 10 minutes, drawing how I think it was constructed. Then I looked at the next photo and oops! there is a piece under the arms. Hmmm, back to the drawing board. Wishing you a relaxing and fun filled week.

Jeanie, if you make a pattern inspired by this style, I'd love to have a copy of it. I can see this in flannel. Denim. Chambray. Oh, my!

You and I must have been dying on the same day. I like yours better ! I love the style; if you get a pattern from Jeannie, I'd like it also (pretty please). Since my peacock feather idea didn't work out, I will have to think of something else. Actually my blue jacket turned out all streaky which I like a lot.
