My Photo
Midland, Texas, United States
My name rhymes with "Lisa," I live in Midland, Texas, because it's warm and the mortgage is cheap, and of course this is my natural hair color. Of course! The EGE--The Ever-Gorgeous Earl--is my husband of 35 years. I have the best job in the world because I get to call up artists and ask them nosy questions and then write about them. I also stitch, podcast, blog, and then, in my spare time, do it all some more.

Home from The Quilt Show

I posted some photos over on my blog at CreateMixedMedia.com, and I was going to post more, but let me tell you: posting photos to a Wordpress blog is way more irritating and time-consuming than posting them here. I do about half a dozen and am like, "OK, people. You're going to have to use your imagination from here on out."

Am I missing something? Is it just me? Am I Photo-Uploading-and-Embedding Impaired? Whatever it is, it just makes me grouchy dealing with each photo, one at a time. So here are the rest, the ones I planned to upload to CMM but, at midnight, when we finally got in and got unloaded and everything, were Just Too Demanding over there. Wordpress needs to do something. I don't know what, but Something. (Of course, I'm still in mourning for my Windows Live Writer, but that's another whinge.)
We stayed at the DoubleTree downtown, approximately 1.258 miles (according to the iPhone) from the convention center. This was perfect for us--there was a Starbucks on the way, so we could get coffee and then walk over, and there were fabulous buildings for The EGE to photograph. Fabulous meaning that the light and clouds did really cool stuff.

If you stand at the convention center, this is the view across the street.
Trust me: you NEED this.
Sandy Schor and Company, my all-time favorite booth EVER. I've bought everything from old glass prisms for my windows to an antique ivory buddha. He has vintage (he says everything he has is vintage) sequins, buttons, jewelry, bakelite, toys, charms, trim, beads. I mean, it's just amazing. Overwhelming. And this is just his traveling stuff:  there's a 6,000 sf (soon to be 9,000) warehouse full of MORE. I know where I want to go if I die and come back as a ghost. . . .

The first person we ran into was Maggie Winfield, a member of my altered artwear group (you can find out more about it--and join if you want--by clicking that link over there in the sidebar). She was absolutely fabulous. We started taking photos of each other, and other people thought we were Celebrities or Something (people in costume, probably) and started taking photos of us, too. She altered everything she's wearing here, and it was amazing. I WANT that jacket. (I can't find a blog or website for Maggie, alas.)
She painted her shoes. So cool.
Then we ran into Tanya Brown, whose quilt won an award. Wish you could see it In Real Life. Amazing colors.
We got to hang with Melanie Testa and Judy Coates.
Much taking of photos and handing around of cameras, of course.

We finally took a break for cookies.
I always head straight to the art doll exhibit to see what Neva Waldt has created. She does the most amazing work. I've got another photo on the iPhone--I'll try to post it later.
Houston is known for art cars. This one was parked on the street.
Even the walk back to the hotel after dark was wonderful.

Need I say that we ate rather a large number of warm chocolate chip cookies? That Corporate Tweeter Person (the one who replied to my tweet (the very first time we stayed at a DoubleTree in Milwaukee and took a bite of one of those cookies) saying we could go down and get cookies *any time* we wanted one) was a total enabler.

We had a great time, but, man, it's good to be home.

More soon~~XO

Everything sounds groovy especially the coffee and cookies. Been listening to your podcasts this morning. You always share such goodies to keep us creating. Thank you!

Thanks! It was great to see them--Melanie looked great and was mobbed everywhere she went, of course.

I wore two of the long yoolies, Carole--I discovered that I LOVE the black one (in the photos) but that it needs WAY more color. Got to think pockets, appliques, SOMETHING. I've got to post photos of the shape--it's made from an ankle-length dress. Oh, wait: before posting photos, I have to TAKE them. Sigh. Where's Alex?

Glad you're enjoying the podcasts, Kathryn. I've got some great ones in the line-up. This week's should be fabulous-- (teaser? You betcha) XO

Yes, I think it is--I've sent a friend request and am hoping to hear from her. Surely she has some of her work online somewhere.

Seems like you had a great time (and great cookies). I'm still laughing from a misunderstanding when reading this post. You wrote the distance from the hotel to the quilt show was 1.258 miles. Now you have to know that we Dutch people write comma's where you write points and vice versa when it comes to numbers. So I was thinking "One THOUSAND two hundred and fifty eight miles? That can't be right." And then it hit me "You idiot! It's one POINT 258 miles." Seems a lot more sensible too. ;-)
